You will be working as a Machine Learning Specialist with Avalo (located in Durham, North Carolina). Avalo is a plant development company using machine learning and evolutionary biology to make sustainable climate-resilient food systems. Job Responsibilities

  • Developing machine learning and pattern recognition algorithms to help identify complex traits and improving forecasting using multiple data types
  • Perform end-to-end data analyses, from hypotheses formulation and design right through to executing writing analysis plans, preparing reports and documentation
  • Strengthening Avalo’s analytics and prediction toolkit by identifying and applying emerging techniques
  • Increasing recognition of Avalo’s data science work by participating in external collaborations.


  • Studies in computer science, statistics, computational biology or evolutionary biology
  • Strong computational and mathematical fundamentals, including machine learning, algorithms, and data structures
  • Experience with large datasets and high-performance computing
  • Fluent coding in at least one common bioinformatics programming language
  • Familiarity with building predictive models from datasets, reduction techniques and biological data resources
  • Intellectual curiosity and attention to detail
  • Proactive approach to collaborations within a team environment
